What I’m Listening to This Week: The Queen of the Night Aria

This is one of the greatest (if not the greatest) coloratura arias in opera. If you aren’t familiar with coloratura, it starts out at 0:51 in the first video. It’s really hard to do, and that’s why every singer almost completely stops moving when they have to start singing the coloratura parts (see 2:05 – 2:30 in the first video).
The aria appears in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute). His character is the Queen of the Night. She’s scary.
