Machaut–Douce Dame Jolie

It’s awesome what they do with medieval music where we do not have enough information to make decisions about instruments or timing. Here are three versions of Guillaume de Machaut‘s Douce Dame Jolie, a 14th century love song:

The first is one of my two favorites:

But there is also this version, which I like on account of the woman’s richly textured voice:

But then there is the more ‘authentic’ uninstrumented version by Gothic Voices which features contralto Margaret Philpot:

Finally, here is a bad version of the song, but it has the advantage of being in English for those of you who are so unfortunate as not to have studied Old French for 20 years. Too bad for you.
